Two Google Analytics cookies and one session identifier of our own. No advertising cookies, no tracking pixels. Here is what each one does and how to block it.
A cookie is a small text file a website places in your browser so it can recognize that browser later. Some are essential to make a site work; some measure traffic; some follow you around the internet to show you ads. This site uses the first two kinds only, and very few of them.
Browsers also offer other kinds of storage that behave like cookies without technically being cookies. This policy covers those too, because the distinction matters to engineers and not to you.

Two more things worth knowing. NEMA staff who sign in to manage the site's content get the cookies and browser storage needed to keep them signed in; if you are not staff, you never receive those. And the site loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, which sends your IP address to Google as part of fetching the font files but, according to Google's own documentation, does not set cookies.
There are no advertising cookies, no social media tracking pixels, and no third-party marketing tags on this site.
Google Analytics tells us how many people visit, which pages they read, roughly where they are, and how they found us. Our own page view count does a smaller version of the same thing without sending anything to a third party. We use both to decide what to write about, which work examples to feature, and whether the site is doing its job. Neither is used to identify you or to advertise to you.
Not at the moment. This site is operated from Maine for a mostly North American audience, and the only third-party cookies it sets are for measuring traffic. If that changes, or if the law that applies to us changes, we will add a consent notice and update this page. In the meantime, the section below explains how to keep these cookies off your browser if you prefer.
